The biological corridor between the Park of the Sierra Litoral and the Besos River constitutes Cobega’s most paradigmatic contribution as far as the improvement of the natural surroundings.
Integrated in the construction project of the Vallés Plant, the biological connector facilitates the exchange of living organisms between the mountains and the river that might have been isolated due to the barrier effect of the building of the diverse industrial parks, infrastructures and housing projects existing in the zone.
The connector is 1,400 m long and 45 to 60 m wide. The project includes, among other things, the construction of two exclusive crossings under the BV-5001 highway for the fauna, an enclosure to impede the animals access the road, the construction of a bridge and underground tunnel for the continuity of the connector. At the end of the connector, before reaching the Besòs River, a lagoon was built that fulfills the function of increasing the biodiversity and consolidating the integration of the zone with the river ecosystem.
As the final phase, Cobega signed an agreement with the organization Acció Natura to redefine the cultivation project of the connector in order to reproduce the basic communities of the zones that it connects.
This way, the vegetation of the connector constitutes a gradual transition from the characteristic vegetation of the coastal mountains to the riverside vegetation during the final section closest to the lagoon and Besòs River.
Also, it presents an adequate structure and composition to guarantee the refuge and peace of the fauna of the connector. In total, 11,300 trees have been replanted.
